CHARACTER
Character Name: Solas
Age: Physically appears to be in his 40s, actually thousands of years old
Species: Elf
Canon: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Canon Point: Post-Trespasser
Character Info: God they used such a weird cap for his picture in this wiki
Personality: Solas is remembered as Fen’Harel, an Elvhen god of rebellion, betrayal, and trickery. Modern elves believe him to be the big bad wolf, figuratively and literally as ‘Fen’Harel’ means ‘Dread Wolf,’ of their mythology. In reality, he incited a rebellion during what modern elves viewed as the golden age of their time. Much of that period is lost to those of present-day Thedas, but Solas fought against the prevalence of slavery among the elvhen people specifically targeting those in charge and offering refuge to those who needed it. He ended this fight when his friend, another of the modern-day elvhen pantheon Mythal, was killed and he forcibly separated the physical world from the magic with a Veil, creating the Fade to keep spirits and magic away from those who would abuse it. This apparently took a lot out of him and he ended up sleeping for over a thousand years and waking up in a very different world he lived in.

As an ancient elf from an era where elves were the dominant race, magic was accessible and simple to use, and immortality was commonplace, Solas approaches modern Thedas from a different perspective. His values of justice and knowledge of how life truly was for the elves in the “golden age” has him approach the elvhen who claim to gatekeep the past, the Dalish, with scorn. They glorify those he struggled against as the war that tore the elves apart led to a simplified view of the past and marked their faces with the slave tattoos of his time to “pledge” themselves to the Elvhen mages/gods of old. This along with the subjugation of his people in the now human-dominated cities of Thedas leds him to believe that his decision to tear magic away from the elves and banish the most powerful that abused it to be a huge mistake.

Cue his massive, self-sacrificing (and self-righteous) quest to correct said mistake that will consume every moment of his life from now on.

He rarely talks of his younger self, but when he does he views himself as a rash, young individual who thought he knew everything. It’s part of his motivation to go back and fix those errors of his younger self. He values inquisitive, greatly enjoying when people question things and seek further knowledge rather than letting them come to pass, and those who make decisions for themselves. Solas owns his mistakes and refuses to let anyone else bear the burden of them. This is where his pride and arrogance shine through best. He refuses to accept an alternative to what he perceives as a solution, ripping down the Veil and unleashing magical hell unto an unprepared Thedas who doesn’t understand the magical properties of the Veil or had to deal with it so freely in thousands of years. Solas fully accepts that the journey he walks is one of death and that it is a necessary one, in his eyes, to bring the state of Thedas back to what it once was where the elvhen/his people were not the lost sheep he currently views them as.

When he is not angrily ranting about the follies of the modern-day elves or Thedas, he can be witty, unassuming, and likeable when he desires. This is how he blends in when necessary, allowing himself to quietly build a network and connection of allies, dubbed the agents of Fen’Harel, to help him restore the elvhen to their former glory (without the slavery bit). His time in ancient elf society has educated him in how to behave himself in court and how to utilize the situation to get what he wants from it. While he is unafraid to speak his mind, if he is engaging in a heated discussion with someone he respects, he is not above apologizing to them later and trying to understand their point of view. As prickly and abrasive as he can, he is capable of being pleasant though this is typically reserved for those who have earned his respect or in situations where he sees benefit to being viewed as a passive observer. The latter goes out the window if he feels a great injustice is being committed, primarily against his people, or the situation could cripple his end goals.

Solas is an incredibly determined and powerful individual. As an old Elvhen ‘god,’ his magical talents placed him above the rest. He used his position of power to aid slaves and now that he sees his people have suffered due to his rash actions to create the Veil and remove magic from easy reach, he seeks to help them. His idea of ‘help’ however could be the death of most, or all, of Thedas. This does not deter him and he is determined that Thedas and the spirits that reside in the Fade were better off when the two blended seamlessly. He fully acknowledges that this is a ‘journey of death’ and accepts any and all consequences that come from his actions as he pied pipers others into joining his cause. The temptation to see the Elvhen restored to glory after years of mistreatment as second-class citizens (or worse in some nations) creates an allure to his cause.

Even with this strong desire and end goal in mind, he admits in his final confrontation with the Inquisitor that he welcomes the Inquisition stepping in to try to stop him. He refuses to offer more information into his goals in order to prevent them knowing too much when going after him, but the longer he lives in modern Thedas, the more he realizes that perhaps there is value there (particularly if he has high approval/respect for the Inquisitor). It is not enough to stray him from his desire and fixation on correcting his mistakes, him even going so far as to take the power of his friend Mythal to restore him to full strength after his long sleep, but that seed of doubt is there and it’s almost as if he wants an alternative if a strong enough one is presented. If this comes in the form of his death after he’s made every effort he could to alter the course he set Thedas on then so be it.
Abilities: As a mage, Solas has the ability to draw from the “Fade”/world around him to control the elements, often manifesting in ice, fire, electricity, or spirit damage. Additionally, it allows him to manipulate physical aspects by pulling/moving objects. As an ancient elf from thousands of years ago in the past, he has more powerful magical abilities as he lived in a time where magic was more freely used and accessible. He can use a great deal of magic before becoming exhausted and can use it offensively (turn living creatures to stone, create ice/lightning storms, fling fire balls, etc.) and supportively (primarily by healing or creating protective barriers). Unlike other mages in the Dragon Age universe, Solas has grown back to his full power where he no longer needs a staff to channel his abilities through and instead uses himself. His powers were on par with the others considered old Elvhen gods and thus is powerful.

For the game, his offensive and defensive magic will be toned down more in line with how he is prior to gaining more of his power back and in line with the abilities he has as a playable party member. Using the ability trees he starts off having talents in, below are descriptions of how his magic may be used in game.

Spirit magic
  • Creation of a barrier that covers one’s body that temporarily protects the target, one can appear around him temporarily when gravely injured

  • Chance to dispel hostile magic, depending on situation

  • Pushes enemies back and encourages them to seek other targets for a short time

  • Resurrect a target based on the rules laid out in game

Winter magic
  • Freeze a target in a sheet of ice temporarily

  • Use magic to move forward, appearing to move in a blur and chill/harm those that are passed through

  • Creation of a glyph that acts as a magical ice mine that can freeze a target temporarily

  • CARNIVAL
Soul Colour: Green, a shade similar to the the background here because there’s no place he loves more.
Ideal Jobs: Anything involving magic, teaching, or healing/medicine.
Relevant Experience: While he does not have a medical degree, he is the designated salty healer-type mage in Inquisition. He’s unfriendly, but enjoys teaching people a great deal when they are happy to ask question and then listen to him ramble on about magic for however long they are willing to stand there. Very good at magic, he has had thousands of years to get good.
Reason for Joining: He really wants his magical ball back that would allow him to access all of his magical ancient elf magic. It was shattered to tiny pieces last he saw it.
